News December 2024

As usual we have a selection of news articles that are useful to Broxtowe residents and some for the wider public.

Merry Christmas

It’s that time of year again when we wish all our clients and stakeholders a very merry Christmas. Our aim is to make a difference to the lives of people in the community and we strive to measure and increase our impact year on year. We can only do this in partnership with our wonderful stakeholders whether they provide us with funds or run services in partnership with us to increase our collective contribution to the communities we serve.

This year has seen a major change to our organisation, from January we merged with the Citizens Advice services in Ashfield and Newark & Sherwood. The merger has enabled us to respond better to the needs of the community and offers greater sustainability for the future of the organisation. In doing so we have retained our commitment to the residents of Broxtowe.

NHS Health and Social Care Awards – Advice on Prescription

We were honoured to be nominated for the NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB Health and Social Care Awards. The awards were open to people and organisations who work in health, care and the voluntary sector. They are aimed at celebrating best practice in line with the aims and principles of the Integrated Care Strategy.

This year there were categories for partnerships, outcomes, health inequalities, value for money, social value, prevention and equity. Our Advice on Prescription project was nominated in the Best Value category. It’s a project that has run for a number of years and provides GPs and health workers a direct referral route for their patients who are struggling with non-clinical problems that may impact on health outcomes, things like debts, housing problems or struggling on low income. Advice on Prescription also delivers Citizens Advice services directly from health settings, like our very own outreach at Stapleford Care Centre and operates in Hucknall, Broxtowe , Rushcliffe and Gedling.

The standard of the nominations was incredible with some life changing projects and excellent innovation taking place. It was a privilege to be nominated and we came runners up in our category. A big well done to everyone who was nominated but also to all our wonderful staff and volunteers who have helped make Advice on Prescription a success. Our representatives at the awards ceremony were Jo Peltekis, Outreach Worker (Ashfield), Jackie Insley (CEO Central Notts), Sally Bestwick (Operations Director Central Notts), Donna Cumberlidge (CEO Nottingham & Dist) and Neil Clurow (Impact & Evaluation Manager Central Notts).

Rebranding of Nottinghamshire Community Foundation

Nottinghamshire Community Foundation, a cornerstone of local philanthropy for over two decades is being renamed as Forever Notts in a determined push to ensure more funding remains local to support the essential work of our city and county grassroots charities.

Citizens Advice services in Nottinghamshire have benefitted from the charitable giving managed by the Foundation on a number of occasions and we wish them every success with their new branding and charitable objectives. In particular Forever Notts have helped us out on a number of occasions where funding for a project has come to an end, allowing us to the time to secure longer term funding for these important projects. They have also provided support for new and innovative projects that we wanted to pilot and build the evidence for continuation. The Foundation is an essential stakeholder for the voluntary sector in Nottinghamshire.

Central to the new branding is Robina Hood the new mascot. Throughout November, Robina was touring the city and county, spreading cheer, and piquing interest.

Broxtowe household energy survey

Reducing the carbon footprint of Broxtowe and saving money for our clients is close to our hearts. Broxtowe Borough Council in conjunction with the University of Nottingham, is undertaking a retrofit project that is aimed at supporting improvements to homes across the Borough. As part of this initiative, the team is also looking at fuel poverty within the Borough and how this is measured and calculated.

To better understand the needs of its residents, the Council is asking householders to complete a brief questionnaire. This should take no longer than five minutes to finish. Your insights will not only contribute to the University’s research but will also play a vital part in shaping the Council’s own Fuel Poverty Strategy, which is currently under development.

Residents can take the survey online (Opens in a new window).

Alternatively, hard copies of the survey have been distributed across the Borough at:

1.       Council Offices, Beeston

2.       Beeston Library

3.       Stapleford Library

4.       Beeston Methodist Church

5.       Bramcote Leisure Centre

6.       Eastwood Library

7.       CAB at Eastwood

8.       Kimberley Library
